The Attachment Connection
Studies in the 1950s revealed that young children hospitalized without their parents respond first by crying for them, then by showing signs of despair, and finally by emotionally detaching from the parents and acting indifferent to their absence. This detachment is hard to repair and highly detrimental to a child's development-most children who feel they cannot rely on their parents grow up to become more emotionally insecure and less self-assured than their peers.
The Attachment Connection sorts out the facts from the fiction about parent-child attachment and shows how paying attention to the emotional needs of your child, particularly during the first five years of development, can help him or her grow up happy, secure, and confident. You'll discover how your child's brain is developing at each stage of growth and learn to use reasonable, easy-to-implement guidelines based on sound science to foster secure attachment, healthy social skills, and emotional regulation in your child.
At last! Newton’s Attachment Connection takes attachment and neuroscience into the mainstream of parenting and clinical practice, bringing clarity and insight to the often misunderstood world of family bonds. Using a sensitive combination of informative vignettes, lucid explanations, and developmental milestones, she deftly illuminates the nature of the bond that develops between parents and their babies and the profound influence which this bond will have on a baby's ability to form secure attachments. As a therapist and academic, Newton’s comprehensive knowledge of the socio-emotional development of children shines through with intelligence, passion, humor, and sensitivity. —Sir Richard Bowlby Bt., president of the Centre for Child Mental Health in London, UK

She works with children and adults in a private practice in La Jolla, CA, and is a longtime consultant for SAY San Diego's Extended Day Childcare program. She is a contributing author to Reader's Guide to Affect Regulation and Neurobiology and Play Therapy for Very Young Children.

50 Ways to Soothe Yourself Without Food
Food has the power to temporarily alleviate stress and sadness, enhance joy, and bring us comfort when we need it most. It's no wonder experts estimate that 75 percent of overeating is triggered by our emotions, not physical hunger. The good news is you can instead soothe yourself through dozens of mindful activities that are healthy for both body and mind.
Susan Albers, author of Eating Mindfully, now offers 50 Ways to Soothe Yourself Without Food, a collection of mindfulness skills and practices for relaxing the body in times of stress and ending your dependence on eating as a means of coping with difficult emotions. You'll not only discover easy ways to soothe urges to overeat, you'll also learn how to differentiate emotion-driven hunger from healthy hunger. Reach for this book instead of the refrigerator next time you feel the urge to snack-these alternatives are just as satisfying!
A thoughtful volume filled with practical solutions for emotional eaters everywhere. -Madelyn H. Fernstrom, Ph.D., CNS, founding director of UPMC Weight Management Center, professor at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center

Library Journal
The Chemotherapy Survival Guide "First published in 1993 as The Chemotherapy and Radiation Therapy Survival Guide, this comprehensive book is updated with additional coverage on biotherapy, immunotherapy, nutrition, stress reduction, chemotherapy drugs, and more; it does not address radiation therapy. Without specifying a particular chemotherapy or treatment regimen for a certain type of cancer, oncology nurses McKay and Schacher include overviews of chemotherapy, treatment plans, and common blood tests as well as information on how to cope with side effects, nutrition, fatigue, and physical changes. In addition to their own expertise, the authors utilize a qualified nutritionist and psychiatrist with in-depth experience in oncology-related support. This general resource may need to be supplemented with information regarding users' specific oncology treatment or chemotherapy regimens. This should be included in any comprehensive consumer health collection, even those owning the earlier editions; also for larger general library collections." Library Journal, April 15, 2009
The Gift of Loving Kindness "According to marriage and family therapist Brantley and massage therapist Hanauer, the practice of loving kindness helps believers offer unconditional kindness and compassion to themselves, their loved ones, adversaries, and anyone in between. Through specific techniques, meditations, and actions, readers will not only learn how to forgive but will be better able to overcome fears, judgments, worries, and pain. The book is essentially a composite of mantras, organized into such chapters as "Be Your Own Friend," "Open the Box of Love," and "We All Make Mistakes." Case studies help the reader apply the material. Best-suited for libraries short on alternative health/spirituality materials." Library Journal, September 16, 2008
