My Mother, My Mirror
As you were growing up, your mother's self-image likely impacted your own in many conscious and unconscious ways. Perhaps those things your mother disliked about herself-her looks, her lack of confidence, or even her personal failures-came to shape your own self-image.
In My Mother, My Mirror, an experienced psychotherapist explores how mothers unwittingly pass on their self-esteem and body image issues to their daughters, helps you break the cycle when parenting your own daughters, and guides you through the process of overcoming the hidden negative messages that keep you from reaching your fullest potential. Without blaming your mother, you will learn to rethink and rebuild your self-image.
A thoughtful and engaging perspective on mother-daughter relationships in all of their complexity. -Melinda Parisi, Ph.D., psychologist at the University Medical Center at Princeton
About the authors: Laura Arens Fuerstein, Ph.D., has worked as an analytic therapist for more than thirty years. She is a popular speaker at conferences about love, sexuality, and women's issues, and has written many articles on those subjects. As a senior faculty member at the New York Center for Psychoanalytic Training and the Institute for Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy of New Jersey, Fuerstein has trained many clinicians in her approach to psychotherapy. She leads supervision groups and maintains a private practice in Highland Park, New Jersey.
Is He Depressed or What?
Millions of women ask themselves the same question every day. They wonder whether their husband or boyfriend's short temper, tendency to withdraw, and mysterious physical complaints might be signs of some deeper problem. Is he depressed, they wonder, or what? The tricky part of recognizing male depression is that, very often, it doesn't look like depression at all. Depressed guys often mask their depression with workaholism or substance abuse. Sometimes they withdraw from their relationships or lash out in defensive (and sometimes aggressive) ways.
If you think the man in your life is struggling with depression, this book can help you recognize his symptoms and encourage him in overcoming his depressed feelings. The book will also show you how to take care of yourself and not get lost in his depression. It provides a range of strategies you can use to communicate with him effectively, cope with his physical symptoms like insomnia and sexual dysfunction, and rebuild intimacy in your relationship. Ultimately, the book offers compassionate (if sometimes firm) advice to help you do what's best for him, for yourself, and for your relationship.
…Is He Depressed or What? will save a lot of marriages and a lot of lives. -Frank S. Pittman III, MD, author of Man Enough: Fathers, Sons, and The Search for Masculinity
Wexler gives us a uniquely useful guide for the partners of depressed men, men whose symptoms may not include sadness and whose coping skills may not include talking about it. Wexler's descriptions of desperately hypermasculine 'manhood attacks' will be particularly enlightening for the beleaguered, bewildered mates of men who turn mean or wild and for the men themselves. Is He Depressed or What? will save a lot of marriages and a lot of lives. -Frank S. Pittman III, MD, author of Man Enough: Fathers, Sons, and the Search for Masculinity
Is He Depressed or What? is invaluable for anyone who is in a relationship with a depressed man. Wexler's style is approachable yet grounded in common sense. He balances giving the reader specific tools and strategies, both for themselves and the person struggling with depression. I recommend it highly. -Rosalind Wiseman, author of Queen Bees and Wannabes
About the authors: David B. Wexler, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist in San Diego specializing in the treatment of relationships in conflict and the executive director of the Relationship Training Institute. He has trained professionals internationally on his pioneering ideas for relationship development and the prevention and treatment of domestic violence. Wexler is the author of When Good Men Behave Badly and Is He Depressed or What?, and he has been featured on The Dr. Phil Show and The Today Show; in the Washington Post, O Magazine, Cosmopolitan, Redbook, and Men's Health; and on dozens of radio and TV programs throughout North America. His work helps to educate the public about relationships in conflict and conflict-resolutions strategies.
Flying without Fear
It starts with an innocent, altogether reasonable worry: What if the plane has a mechanical defect? What if I have a panic attack? Then the anxious thoughts multiply. You may know that these fears are irrational, but that doesn't slow them down. And before you know it, the risks of flying seem so great, you can't even think about getting on a plane.
It's easy to keep aerophobia at bay for years by simply avoiding air travel. But amid all the lost vacations, missed opportunities for business travel, and rare visits to far-flung loved ones, you may decide it's time to put away your fear of flying for good. Flying Without Fear is an essential guidebook for the millions of people who have made that decision. Based in cognitive behavioral therapy, the program in this book will prepare you for every sight, sound, and sensation you will experience in the airport and airplane. This fully revised and updated edition also includes new information about terrorism concerns and airport security measures adopted after 9/11.
About the author: Duane Brown, Ph.D., is a professor emeritus at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, where he taught for twenty-five years. Now retired from private practice, Brown has published twenty-five books and more than one hundred articles and book chapters. He also acted as lead trainer for the American Airlines AAir Born Program, where he led dozens of fear-of-flying seminars.

Library Journal
The Chemotherapy Survival Guide "First published in 1993 as The Chemotherapy and Radiation Therapy Survival Guide, this comprehensive book is updated with additional coverage on biotherapy, immunotherapy, nutrition, stress reduction, chemotherapy drugs, and more; it does not address radiation therapy. Without specifying a particular chemotherapy or treatment regimen for a certain type of cancer, oncology nurses McKay and Schacher include overviews of chemotherapy, treatment plans, and common blood tests as well as information on how to cope with side effects, nutrition, fatigue, and physical changes. In addition to their own expertise, the authors utilize a qualified nutritionist and psychiatrist with in-depth experience in oncology-related support. This general resource may need to be supplemented with information regarding users' specific oncology treatment or chemotherapy regimens. This should be included in any comprehensive consumer health collection, even those owning the earlier editions; also for larger general library collections." Library Journal, April 15, 2009
The Gift of Loving Kindness "According to marriage and family therapist Brantley and massage therapist Hanauer, the practice of loving kindness helps believers offer unconditional kindness and compassion to themselves, their loved ones, adversaries, and anyone in between. Through specific techniques, meditations, and actions, readers will not only learn how to forgive but will be better able to overcome fears, judgments, worries, and pain. The book is essentially a composite of mantras, organized into such chapters as "Be Your Own Friend," "Open the Box of Love," and "We All Make Mistakes." Case studies help the reader apply the material. Best-suited for libraries short on alternative health/spirituality materials." Library Journal, September 16, 2008
