Just One Thing
In Buddha's Brain, Rick Hanson explained the neuroscience underlying meditation and helped readers maximize the benefits of mindfulness for greater happiness and peace of mind. Building on the success of Buddha's Brain, Just One Thing presents over fifty simple practices readers can do that can have a dramatic positive impact on their lives. Just one simple practice can make big changes in readers' lives by gradually increasing readersí capacity for joy, relaxation, and gratitude.
Each practice is grounded in neuroscience and positive psychology. The book offers information on why the practice is important and how it works, guidance for performing the practice, and additional resources readers can use to delve deeper into that particular type of practice. Some of the practices encourage readers to focus on gratitude for what they have, while others offer guidance for taking refuge and slowing down in stressful times. All of the practices are designed to gradually change the way readers process their emotions and create new neural pathways for greater happiness and fulfillment.
"These are great practices—wise and straightforward, scientific and nourishing. They can transform your life." —Jack Kornfield, PhD, author of The Wise Heart and A Path with Heart
About the author: Rick Hanson, Ph.D., is a neuropsychologist and meditation teacher. A summa cum laude graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles, he cofounded the Wellspring Institute for Neuroscience and Contemplative Wisdom and edits the Wise Brain Bulletin. He and his wife have two children.
Leaves Falling Gently
Written by a nurse and researcher who has more than thirty years of experience working with people who have terminal illnesses, Leaves Falling Gently shows these individuals how they can change the internal experience of coming to terms with dying, if not the external reality of their condition, through mindfulness and compassion.
Through clinical and personal stories and research-based guided mindfulness exercises, readers learn and apply the benefits of mindfulness and compassion in order to foster clarity, acceptance, and strength. Each short chapter helps readers come to terms with their situation and maintain courage by offering practical guidance for coping with symptoms, relating to loved ones, and staying mindful even when under medical treatment or while in a hospital.
"Leaves Falling Gently offers a direct, compelling, and practical guide to living fully even when facing serious illness. It can help us help our friends and family in the times when we so rarely know how to respond." —Sharon Salzberg, author of Real Happiness and Lovingkindness
About the author: Susan Bauer-Wu, PhD, RN, integrates her scientific research in mind-body medicine and clinical experience as an oncology, psychiatric, and hospice nurse to improve the well-being of those living with serious illness and their loved ones. She is associate professor at Emory University in Atlanta, GA, and lives in Atlanta, GA, and Brookline, MA.
The Mind's Own Physician
When science meets religion, the result can be explosive or insightful. By inviting the Dalai Lama and leading neuroscience researchers to join in conversation, the Mind and Life Institute in Washington, DC, set the stage for a fascinating exploration of the potential of the human mind. This conference, recorded and transcribed for the first time in The Mind's Own Physician, answered the questions millions have asked about brain functioning: What can mindfulness do for me? Can our minds actually influence the outcomes of physical disease? How can we unlock the brainís potential without spending hours in meditation? The Dalai Lama poses many more questions about secular approaches to mindfulness, the brain biology of meditation, and meditation's relationship to mental and physical health, which are then answered by the preeminent meditation scholars, academics, and researchers in each specialty. Edited by world-renowned researchers Jon Kabat-Zinn and Richard Davidson, who also attended the conference, this book presents the full dialogue along with new research that sheds light on each topic that was discussed.
"The Mind’s Own Physician is a journey of understanding, in which an integrative dialogue unfolds between the spiritual leaders of contemplative meditation and scientists at the forefront of mind-body medicine. This transformative conversation provides valuable insight into how meditative practices can balance the mind with effects on the body, as well as, potential benefits for human health. This blending of contemplative traditions with Western science opens a mindful awareness that has the empowering capacity to fully engage people in their health, and more broadly, in the well-being of our societies." —Michael R. Irwin, MD, Cousins Professor of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences, David Geffen School of Medicine, University of California, Los Angeles
About the authors: Jon Kabat-Zinn, PhD, is internationally known for his work as a scientist, writer, and meditation teacher engaged in bringing mindfulness into the mainstream of medicine and society. He is professor of medicine emeritus at the University of Massachusetts Medical School and author of numerous books, including Full Catastrophe Living, Arriving at Your Own Door, and Coming to Our Senses.
Richard J. Davidson, PhD, is director of the Laboratory for Affective Neuroscience, the Waisman Laboratory for Brain Imaging and Behavior, and the Center for Investigating Healthy Minds at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He is currently the William James Professor and Vilas Research Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry at the University of Wisconsin. He has coauthored or edited over thirteen books, including Visions of Compassion and The Handbook of Affective Science.

The User’s Guide to the Human Mind: Why Our Brains Make Us Unhappy, Anxious, and Neurotic and What We Can Do About It
"Despite plenty of humor and numerous examples, this discussion of the human psyche is complex—covering emotions, thoughts, moods, and the internal battle between our primitive and higher minds. Still, though it lacks the simple explanations necessary for wide appeal, the book will nevertheless please serious readers of psychology."
Mike Tyson Slept Here
"Highly readable, wry, and thought-provoking, this novel should appeal to a wide audience as well as to readers of such popular prison-themed narratives as Stephen King’s Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redmption and The Green Mile."
ADHD & Me "[Blake] Taylor offers readers an inside look at how he gets along on a daily basis as well as a guide for people in the same situation... Students struggling with ADHD and their parents will benefit from the author's insights..."
Publishers Weekly
Overcoming Compulsive Hoarding: Why You Save & How You Can Stop "...The authors, two psychologists and a psychiatrist, all experts in treating forms of obsessive-compulsive disorder, define the syndrome as "the acquisition and saving of possessions that have little or no value" or a value perceived only by the hoarder, who "has great difficulty" discarding the objects. The book offers case histories showing how damaging the syndrome can be to one's relationships and quality of life, self-assessment exercises and, most usefully, a discussion of treatment options, from self-help strategies using cognitive therapy to outside professional help."
Things Might Go Terribly, Horribly Wrong: A Guide to Life Liberated from Anxiety "..This empathetic guide helps readers recognize that brooding over painful or disorienting thoughts is a natural part of everyone's life, necessitating the flexibility to ""work around obstacles... inside our own heads.""
Eat, Drink, and Be Mindful: How to End Your Struggle with Mindless Eating and Start Savoring Food with Intention and Joy "Psychologist and author [Susan] Albers expands on themes introduced in Eating Mindfully with this workbook for devotees of her conscientious approach to health and weight loss. Her philosophy involves becoming aware of eating patterns and the emotions one associates with food, encouraging readers to discover the how and why of their everyday diet in order to gain greater self-control..."
Buddha’s Brain: The Practical Neuroscience of Happiness, Love, and Wisdom "...[Rick] Hanson argues that the brain's functioning can be affected by simple practices and meditation to foster well-being. Classic Buddhist concepts such as the three trainings—mindfulness, virtuous action and wisdom—frame Hanson's approach... Clear instructions guide the reader toward more positive thoughts and feelings..."
Disarming the Narcissist: Surviving and Thriving with the Self-Absorbed "Everyone knows a narcissist, one of those vainglorious individuals in desperate need of constant affirmation and attention. Cognitive therapist [Wendy] Behary's book argues that by modifying your own behavior, you can manage your relationship with such a person... The author hopes to assist the reader in overcoming the emotional obstacles involved in interaction with a boss, spouse, friend or relative. Rather than focus on changing the narcissist (which may be impossible), this book aims to help the reader improve self-knowledge to see why the narcissist pushes his or her buttons and how to cope. ...Behary's book will surely provide help to many in need of a confidence bolster in the face of provocation."
Eat Naked: Unprocessed, Unpolluted, and Undressed Eating for a Healthier, Sexier You "Beginning with a primer on healthy eating, [Margaret] Floyd recommends that "naked" foods ("fresh, whole, organic, homemade") comprise 80% of a diet, leaving a 20% leeway for special occasions... Floyd, a proponent of the thinking behind Nourishing Traditions, rejects most forms of soy and gluten, and recommends raw dairy and soaked grains. Early chapters review categories of foods and conclude with easy-reference charts for "Best, Next Best, Okay, and Steer Clear" choices. Following tips on reducing stress, shopping for natural ingredients, and simplified cooking, Floyd dedicates a third of her book to recipes created with Chef James Barry, covering basics (Chicken Stock, Balsamic Vinaigrette), innovative uses for vegetables (Raw Cauliflower Couscous), colorful entrees (Tortilla-less Green Enchiladas, Seared Salmon with Garlic Broccoli Rabe and Summer Squash), and sweet treats (Coconut Nut Date Balls). Floyd's message won't be new to anyone on the healthy fringe; for most everyone else, it could be quite a palate cleanser. "
