Workshop Description
Compulsive hoarding is the acquisition and failure to discard a large number of possessions that appear to be useless or of limited value in attempt to postpone or decrease distress or anxiety. Compulsive hoarding is a feature of several psychiatric disorders, including obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and is a significant problem for about 4-5% of the population. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Compulsive Hoarding and Acquiring is a 3-hour workshop that presents the essential features of cognitive behavioral therapy for hoarding, which is a promising psychological treatment for the condition. The workshop will focus on the cognitive behavioral model of compulsive hoarding and covers how to evaluate hoarding behavior, developing a treatment plan, and how to carry out typical cognitive behavioral interventions for the condition.

About the Presenter

Michael A. Tompkins, Ph.D. is a licensed psychologist (PSY 13822), a founding partner of the San Francisco Bay Area Center for Cognitive Therapy, Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of California, Berkeley, and a Diplomate and Founding Fellow of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy. Dr. Tompkins specializes in the treatment of anxiety and mood disorders in adults, adolescents, and children. He is the author or co-author of numerous articles and chapters on cognitive-behavior therapy and related topics, as well as four books, including Digging Out: Helping Your Loved One Manage Cutter, Hoarding, and Compulsive Acquiring (with Tamara L. Hartl) (New Harbinger, 2009), which has been praised as a seminal work on the topic of compulsive hoarding. Dr. Tompkins serves on the Advisory Board of Magination Press, the children’s press of the American Psychological Association, and is a recipient of the 1994 Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award by the California Pacific Medical Center, San Francisco and the 2005-2006 Distinguished Instructor Award, University of California Berkeley Extension. He has been featured in The New York Times, Wall Street Journal,and on television (The Learning Channel, Arts & Entertainment, KTVU) and radio (KQED, KPFA, KISS-FM). Dr. TompTompkins has presented widely on the topic of cognitive behavioral therapy, hoarding, and other topics.
