ATTENTION ACT Trainers and Therapists! |
||
Continuing in that tradition, New Harbinger is now releasing several new ACT books: client books on PTSD, and anxiety; therapist volumes on depression, PTSD, and case conceptualization. Building on existing books, a new "core" volume helps therapists learn ACT, and a six-DVD series that includes ACT therapists from around the world shows concrete examples of ACT methods and styles. With these materials, therapists who are not knowledgeable about ACT can begin to explore it in their clinical practice, and to see directly how it impacts their work. More experienced ACT clinicians can build their skills and create more targeted treatment plans to fit specific client needs. ACT is an empirically oriented behavioral and cognitive therapy, but in ACT that fact is a foundation, not a fence. It is an approach that is accessible to therapists from virtually any orientation, and speaks to some of the deepest issues we face as clinicians. I have published several ACT books with New Harbinger because they understand that the field is changing and that ACT has a role to play in taking down some of the arbitrary barriers between traditions. If you haven't yet studied ACT and its application to your clinical practice, New Harbinger has become a leading source of the materials needed to do just that. Steven C. More than other models of psychotherapy, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) is an experiential therapy. As an ACT therapist, you'll be "in the trenches" with your clients, confronting painful experiences at the same time they do. As a therapist, you'll ask your clients to be willing to feel what they feel, be mindful of what they think, and keep commitments that are consistent with their personal values. At the same time, you'll be doing the same thing. As you get more familiar with ACT, you'll find that some aspect of the therapy seem unusually simple, matters of common sense. Other aspects will seem very difficult and counterintuitive. Fortunately, ACT resources from New Harbinger Publications can help you fully understand the theoretical and experiential aspects of ACT and bring this remarkable new direction in psychotherapy into your own practice. The ACT in Action DVD series is an unprecedented training tool for professionals. In these six DVDs, you'll be introduced to the core processes of ACT. You'll get to hear each explained by ACT-founder Steven Hayes and other ACT clinicians, and you'll get to see the processes carried out in a clinical setting. Best of all, you can refer to each of these programs again and again as your experiences with the ACT model develop over time. In addition to these videos, be sure to take a look at Learning ACT by Jason Luoma, Steven Hayes, and Robyn Walser. This book offers a logical, stepwise approach to learning and practicing ACT as a clinician. It offers detailed overviews of the core processes, case conceptualization, session problem-solving techniques, and much more. The book comes with a brief DVD that illustrates some of the issues developed in the book. Together, Learning ACT and the ACT in Action series will provide you a sound, practical foundation for using ACT techniques to help your clients lead rich and meaningful lives. |
