Night Eating Syndrome Comes Out of the Dark

Nine percent of individuals seen in clinics for the treatment of obesity suffer from it. Approximately 1.5 percent of the general population has it. It was identified in 1955, yet you’ve probably never heard of it.

It’s night eating syndrome (NES), and with the publication of Overcoming Night Eating Syndrome: A Step-by-Step Guide to Breaking the Cycle (May 2004), it’s finally come out of the dark. Coauthor Kelly Allison, Ph.D., has appeared on CBS’s The Early Show and is scheduled for an appearance on The View in early September. The book has been covered in Newsweek, and Jane Brody has written about it in The New York Times. Allison has also been interviewed on numerous national and local radio programs. Albert J. Stunkard, MD, the physician who, with his colleagues in 1955, first identified NES is coauthor of Overcoming Night Eating Syndrome. Dr. Stunkard’s research has been supported by the National Institutes of Health for forty years, and he is the founder of the Weight and Eating Disorders Program at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.

Night eating syndrome is characterized by five primary signs: Not feeling hungry in the morning, overeating in the evening, difficulty falling asleep, waking at night and eating, while feeling depressed. For more information, click here.
