Third-Wave Behavior Therapy
The third-wave of behavior therapy (following the first wave of B.F. Skinner’s behavioral conditioning and the second wave of cognitive behavioral therapy in the tradition of Albert Ellis and Aaron Beck) focuses on the context and function of psychological phenomena, not just their form. Instead of trying to find a “cure” for a client’s depression, for example, a third-wave therapist would try to establish what function depressed thoughts addressed in his or her life, seeking to deal with dysfunction in the context of the whole of his or her experience. Instead of focusing narrowly on symptom relief, third-wave behavior therapies guide clients toward broader life-improvement measures that are based in increased psychological flexibility that comes from acceptance, mindfulness, and committed action. New Harbinger’s books based on third-wave behavior therapy help readers understand and use these new approaches to help their clients and themselves lead richer, more purposeful lives.
