Cancer Patient's Guide

An Interview with the author, Derek R. Hopko, of The Cancer Patient’s Guide To Overcoming Depression And Anxiety. Carl Lejeuz is coauthor of the book.

New Harbinger Publications: What is behavior activation?

Derek R. Hopko: Behavior activation is a structured process for working with individuals that focuses on both defining a core system of values and goals that one wishes to aspire toward and brainstorming about specific, observable behaviors that one can engage in that are consistent with these values and move the person toward experiencing greater pleasure and rewards in life,. The process also works to develop a progressive plan for how, when, and where people will engage in these behaviors.

NHP: How is behavior activation effective for dealing with cancer patients?

DRH: Behavior activation is effective for cancer patients because many cancer patients become limited in their ability to engage in different life behaviors because of depression, anxiety, stress, and possibly pain. Behavioral activation provides the structure to make important behavioral changes and re-establish control over one’s life, changes that help to eliminate these feelings of depression and anxiety.

NHP: How does behavior activation compare to other forms of treatment for depression and anxiety?

DRH: In general, behavioral activation and other comprehensive cognitive-behavioral therapies for depression are at least as effective as and sometimes more effective than other forms of therapy as well as antidepressant medications.

NHP: What do you suggest readers do to alleviate the depression and anxiety that may arise from cancer diagnoses and treatment?

DRH: Carefully follow the recommendations and strategies put forth in this workbook.

NHP: What makes you particularly qualified to write about treating depression and anxiety in cancer patients?

DRH: Through doctoral training and academic pursuits, we have developed an expertise in assessing and treating depressive and anxiety conditions and together have published almost 200 research articles and book chapters related to depression and anxiety. Several of these works also involve understanding the role of depression and anxiety in the lives of cancer patients.
