Dogs, and Snakes, and Spiders!
New Book Tackles Animal and Insect Phobias

Imagine having a panic attack that causes you to leave work because a spider crawled across your desk. For some Americans, it’s not a far-fetched scenario. Six percent of them live with a full-blown animal or insect phobia that can launch them into panic and anxiety and make their quality of life plummet. Twenty-two percent of Americans have a strong fear of certain animals that can disrupt their lives.

And it’s not just the creepy, crawly creatures that can upset someone with an animal phobia. “…Other animals that are often feared include dogs, cats, birds, and bees. In fact, people can have a fear of just about any animal…we have seen people with specific fears of worms, moths, squirrels, fish, cockroaches, ants, sharks, and owls,” say Martin Antony, Ph.D., and Randi McCabe, Ph.D., authors of Overcoming Animal & Insect Phobia (June 05).

In their new book they show readers step-by-step how to overcome this often overlooked phobia. They also make it clear that recover is not only possible but probable. In fact, specific phobias such as these are the most amenable to treatment of all anxiety disorders. The cognitive-behavioral program offered in this book is particularly effective. Research tells us that those who successfully use it to overcome animal phobias are usually able to maintain their improvement without relapse.
