Eight DBT microskills instructional videos

to help you take what you've learned a step further

The microskills in these videos are at the very heart of DBT. While learning theory is useful, learning how to actually do DBT is what will allow you to get the treatment outcomes you are looking for. To help, these essential, in-the-trenches tools address the key factors that keep emotionally dysregulated clients from fully engaging in the therapeutic process.

Emotion Exposure video screenshot

Develop an "emotion log" to record triggering events and the emotions and coping responses that follow

check

Identify patterns of emotions and responses that aren't helpful-or potentially harmful

check

This video will help you engage parents of clients with DBT in a way that is nonjudgmental, and which validates the emotional experiences of the parents and other family members.

You'll also learn:

check

How to support parents by acknowledging their struggles in parenting a child who suffers emotionally, and has problematic behaviors that challenge the family

check

The importance of acceptance as it relates to change, and how the therapeutic skills we use with our clients are necessary for their family members as well

Closing Thoughts

A Note from Our Cofounder

The most rewarding aspects of my work with clients have been to witness their emotional pain diminish, to give them tools to better face distress, and to help them shift from emotion-driven behaviors to a life based in values.

Often, the greatest challenge is the client's commitment to avoidance—all the ways they've learned to numb, suppress, run, withdraw, surrender, or attack in the face of pain. This commitment to avoidance not only makes the pain worse, but makes the client resist positive change processes in therapy.

DBT is such an invaluable therapy because it targets avoidance with the dialectic of validation vs. change. The client's pain and avoidance are strongly validated by the therapist, while the client is supported in learning key skills for facing distress, downregulating strong emotions, and replacing emotion-driven behavior with new, more effective responses.

There is a continuous balancing process between acknowledging how much a client hurts and how hard therapy is vs. the many specific changes necessary to save the client's life.

It is my hope and expectation that these DBT videos, training materials, and client resources will enhance each therapist's skill at targeting and reducing the human suffering created by emotion dysregulation.

Matthew McKay, PhD
