Understanding Anxiety

If you’re struggling with anxiety, you know that it can be distressing, overwhelming, and even debilitating.

As you’re simply trying to go about your day, you can find yourself stuck in an endless cycle of worry or become paralyzed by feelings of fear, panic, or a sense of impending doom.

What’s more, you might experience physical symptoms such as a racing heart, tightness in your chest, sweating, shaking, and more.

It can literally be a whole-body experience.

And if you don’t understand what’s going on, it would be only natural to wonder “Why is this happening to me?”

As it turns out, learning the answer to that question is an important first step to getting anxiety out of your way so you can get back to living your life.

The reason you experience anxiety has everything to do with your nervous system’s defense response, also known as the fight, flight, or freeze response.

The defense response evolved to alert our ancestors to life-or-death threats such as predators and prepare them to run away or fight to survive another day.

And because the people with a strong defense response were the ones to survive, they passed on this fear-producing nervous system to most humans alive today.

What this means is that anxiety is not your fault. It’s a part of being human.

The problem is that in modern life, this response gets mistakenly triggered when we are not in immediate danger, such as when we’re stuck in traffic, reading social media, or preparing for an exam.

The result is the emotions, thoughts, and physical symptoms we know as anxiety.

Over time, anxiety can interfere with our ability to think about things, set goals for the future, and lead the life we want for ourselves.

By understanding why you have anxiety and how it is produced by the brain, you can form a solid foundation for building a calmer life where you are in control, not your anxiety.

Creating a Purposeful Life

Individuals suffering from anxiety use a variety of words to describe the symptoms they experience.

They may refer to overwhelming stress and pressure, endless worries and racing thoughts, or a sense of fear, panic, or anger.

But no matter which of these you experience, they can all get in the way of living life to the fullest.

And although they sound somewhat different, neuroscience has revealed two pathways in the brain that drive all these symptoms—the amygdala and cortex pathways.

This is great news because it has allowed for the development of specific strategies to target each one.

When you understand these pathways, you’ll no longer have to guess what will work for you.

You’ll be empowered to choose the most effective strategies for your symptoms and achieve a calmer life no longer blocked by anxiety.

As you embark on this journey to take back your life from anxiety, it’s important to ask yourself a few key questions:

What has your anxiety stopped you from doing?

What goals has it prevented you from reaching?

How do you want your life to change?

Maybe it’s stopped you from asking for that raise. Maybe it’s kept you from pursuing that degree. Or maybe it’s held you back from fulfilling relationships.

Whatever the answers are for you, let them be a guiding light as you create a new, calmer lifestyle that frees you to pursue your goals and dreams.

From the Publisher

Catherine M. Pittman’s passion for treating anxiety was sparked during her graduate training when she was assigned to a professor researching fear conditioning in rats.

Given that she was looking forward to the opportunity to be trained to help people, this assignment was initially a great disappointment.

But the insights she gained allowed her to understand the role of the amygdala in fear, a foundational part of her powerful approach, which emphasizes the importance of addressing both the amygdala and cortex pathways as a means of achieving the best possible outcomes for those struggling with anxiety.

In this course, Pittman takes a neuroscience-informed cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) approach, while also drawing on dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), mindfulness meditation, and physiological interventions.

Treatments from these modalities used throughout the course include psychoeducation, cognitive restructuring, thought stopping and replacement, cognitive reappraisal, goal setting, self-regulation, mindfulness training, exposure, distress tolerance, acceptance, systematic desensitization, relaxation training, progressive muscle relaxation, diaphragmatic breathing, exercise, and interventions to improve sleep.

Participants will emerge with a complete, personalized program to help them effectively manage anxiety and live a life driven by their goals and dreams.

In addition, mental health professionals taking this course will observe an evidence-based approach to anxiety that:

  • Crucially addresses both the amygdala and cortex pathways
  • Demonstrates how to communicate the neuroscience of anxiety in a clear, easy-to-understand way that increases clients’ motivation to participate in therapy and homework exercises
  • Provides interventions effective for anxiety-related disorders including PTSD and OCD, in addition to anxiety disorders

This course is an empowering and structured guide offering both vital understanding and actionable skills and strategies for the effective management of anxiety.

Pursuing Your Goals, Hopes, and Dreams

A Message from Catherine M. Pittman, PhD

Struggling with anxiety, stress, worry, panic, or fear can often become overwhelming and even debilitating.

And when it does, it blocks you from all the things that matter most in life.

But there’s something I want you to know:

It’s not your fault—because anxiety is a normal part of the human condition.

It was critical for alerting our ancestors to danger, keeping them safe, and allowing us to be here today.

The problem is that anxiety is no longer a good fit for the way we live in the 21st century.

It helps us survive, but it doesn’t help us thrive.

The good news is that we know what to do about it!

Neuroscience has identified two brain pathways—the amygdala and cortex pathways—that are responsible for anxiety.

This has allowed us to develop effective strategies that target and calm these pathways and get anxiety out of the way.

In my new course, I explain the roles that these pathways play in anxiety using easy-to-understand language and everyday examples.

Then I teach proven skills to calm each pathway in both the short term and long term.

When you finish the course, you'll come away with a complete program you can use to manage your anxiety and get back to living the life you desire.

I hope you’ll join me and learn the powerful insights, skills, and strategies you need to break the endless cycle of worry, panic, and fear, and get back to pursuing all your goals, hopes, and dreams.
